Vertical farm. Green Plants on the Sandy Land, Dubai
Talking about the geography of Dubai, it consist of many sandy desert and its warm and humid climate let most of UAE’s farmers take up cultivated land to plant date palms, which in the early 1990s numbered about 4 million.
Expert Nicholas Lodge, says that Agriculture in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) makes not too much sense, as it uses more than sixty per cent of the country’s water but contributing less than 1 per cent to the economy. Production of just one kilogram of steak requires more than 10,000 liters of water. United Arab Emirates (UAE) has the only 1 per cent of the world’s freshwater available to be used. Demand is increasing for water-intensive forms of food.
Seeing into the agriculture of Dubai itself, people in this emirate will remember about Al Aweer, one of suburbs in Dubai. It is about 35 kilometers from the city centre. It ever became a farming village in Dubai with Bedouin camps, until the 1990s. Then, the city was hugely expanded and when the Emirates Road was established.
Then green plants on the land of Dubai almost became the recollection until an architecture company from Italy “Studio Mobile” tries to make an innovation for farming activities. This studio will build a farm with vertical position in a building named “Vertical Farm”.
The building, which shaped like a plant, will optimize the benefits from sea water for two needs. The first favor is to cool the weather in that building and the second favor to water the plants by changing it into pure water. The air which comes into the building will be cooled by the sea water and the air itself will be condensated until it turned in water. The water obtained from this condensation will be used to water the plants. By the Vertical Farm project, many people expect that the price of the plants as the harvest products will be the same as a high quality bag.
Vertical Farm takes a lot of attention from all the countries around the world, but it has been a proof that Dubai is never been stopped to make an innovation. After spread the amazement around the world by its highest building “Burj Khalifa”, this emirate want to let all eyes of the world know about their potential to make a unique agriculture model. One of the purposes is to tell the citizens that Dubai is not the place which only concern to the modern development but also love the nature. They want to relieve the dreams about green land on that sandy place.
Dubai also amazes the world by its man-made land which represents a significant expansion beyond its initial 1,500 mi² designation due to land reclamation from the sea which contained some famous and formed the Three Palms and the Waterfront.
